Bulgaria DWS 2009

We're off for another DWS session in Bulgaria.

Chased by a Bear

This happened some years ago while I was still attending courses at the university. I "stumbled" upon the forgotten folder while looking for something else into my computer.

It was on the 8th of March 2006 and, normally, men who have some sort of self esteem and like to think about themselves as being gentlemen, offer flowers to all the women in their lives. I did so for my mother and sister - not for being a gentleman but just to make them happy and to show my love and appreciation for them as they showed it to me in many cases (I had no girlfriend then).

So I was supposed to attend classes at the economics faculty but I skipped it 'cause I just didn't like to offer flowers to the teacher who held the classes during that day...I didn't like her style of teaching, I didn't like her purely theoretical approach in economics matters, I guess I didn't like her at all - I am to blame for that, the lady was just doing her job.

Those were the days when people used to frequently encounter bears at the forested outskirts of Brasov. The same very thing happened to us - me and Bogdan Rus - we had a bear encounter while descending from Tampa mountain and we were also chased a bit. At 1'28" on the video, one can see my bruised face - I passed through some berry bushes and the thorns punctured my face here and there. I only filmed the bear for a few seconds after which I started running (my boots are visible). Too bad the video has no sound...

I had several other bear encounters while trekking or mountaineering; one of them was pretty scary, up close and personal but it wasn't documented on video as this one. Fortunately I was never injured.

Beware of bears!

Highball

The basic meaning of highball as a noun refers to a “spirit drink mixed with soda and served in a tall glass”.
However, the slang sense of the word is most important for us.

General slang:

Verb – “to move at full speed”
Noun – “object moving at full speed”

Climbers' slang:

Highball (n.) A term for a boulder that is so high, falling when close to the top could cause serious injury. Some highballs have anchor bolts at the top to allow for protected top-rope climbing.

Check out the mountain bike jerseys and Highball store where you can buy mountain bike shirts and climbing T shirts.

Cheers!
