Update: Check out my latest DIY climbing fingerboard video tutorial.
I have built my own fingerboard at home and it's proven to be a good tool for my training. I can't go bouldering or climbing every single day so it's more convenient to dedicate an hour in the evening for working out on the board.
I do pull ups, dead hangs, shrugs, lock offs on all types of holds. I also have a horizontal bar next to my board and this enables me to do fun stuff as well - I pass from the board onto the bar and vice-versa. This helps me work on my dynamic moves and gives me the possibility to control my swing which resembles the real climbing experience when doing overhangs or steep walls. It's more like a game for me now and I don't consider it as serious training - it used to be serious when I started climbing. So keeping it fun it's a part of the philosophy.
Now that we have the climbing gym most of my training takes place there and consists of either bouldering or rope climbing. They have two boards that I like to hang onto when I feel there's nothing else to do.
My hangboard is made of plywood and it's basically a piece of an artificial climbing wall, it has T nuts on the back and whenever I need to change the positions of the holds I can do it easily from the front of the board. Most of my holds are made of wood but I also have some resin slopers.
If you would like to have such a piece of gear into your home then have a look at the video below. The hangboard is made by Metolius - famous for their climbing gear and for America's no1 climbing chalk.
