Win Free Gore Tex Gear - "Where in the World?" Contest

Here's a cool contest in which you can win head-to-toe Gore Tex gear.

What's this all about?

GORE-TEX is hosting a daily contest within their community of outdoor adventurers called "Where in the World?" The challenge features a photo and clue of an iconic outdoor location. A little more of the photo will be revealed each day, until the first contestant to correctly guess the location wins for that round. Up to 20 locations will be featured until the game wraps up Dec. 17 - 2010, and the player who has earned the most points will win head-to-toe GORE-TEX Pro Shell gear - just in time for winter activities.

What you need to do 

1. Go to Gore Tex Community webpage and create an account (see picture below): https://www.gore-tex.com/community/

2. Visit the contest page, log in using your previously created username and password and write where you think the photo was taken: http://media.community.gore-tex.com/page/where-in-the-world.html

If you're fond of geography this should't be too hard for you. Especially if you know all those cool spots for climbing and mountaineering around the world.

Climbing T shirt for Ladies - Red Point

I came into rock climbing thinking that one must just get to the top, no matter what style and technique... As soon as I saw climbers clipping the quick-draws in the bolts and then passing the rope through the carabiners I knew there's more to it.

Red point climbing means you only have to hold onto the rock as you ascend, using the bolts or pitons for security purposes only. That is, if you take a fall that's the only case you would make real use of those securing points. You must reach the top of the route or finish the pitch without falling and without hanging in the rope for resting. That's red point - what Germans call rotpunkt.

The red point style led to the sport climbing movement as we know it today. Back in the mid 70's, the red point at the bottom of a route meant it could be free climbed without using the pegs as handholds or footholds. Read more about this on Wikipedia.

Winter Mountaineering Tour in Dragus - Fagaras Mountains

Just before 2009 we had a window of clear weather that lasted about two weeks - it basically spanned from 2008 to 2009. It was freezing cold and the sky was clear, at least on the top of the mountains it was.

A seven hours hike brought us to the hunting cabin, up in Dragus Ridge - Fagaras Mountains, where we had our base camp. From there we hiked up on the ridge and took photos of the beautiful landscape.

This year the weather wasn't too great and thus we didn't have the opportunity to go there. Instead of snow and frost we only had rain and mild temperatures...

Here is a short list of useful things one should have when mountaineering in wintertime:

• waterproof winter boots
• vacuum flask with hot tea
• mini stove (Primus)
• snowshoes or cross country skis
• gaiters
  
• 4 season sleeping bag (filled with down or hollow fiber)
• wind and waterproof pants and jacket
• telescopic trekking poles
• crampons
• ice axe
